Christmas…that most wonderful time of the year! With a blanket of freshly fallen snow, the smells of chestnuts roasting and cookies baking and the sounds of Christmas carols everywhere; there’s magic in the air.

It’s also the busiest time of the year with endless things to be done in preparation of this joyous yuletide season. Shopping of course overtakes everything else as the 25th of December draws nearer. Stores at Christmas time are a never-ending scene of shoppers jostling with each other trying to reach out and grab that last toy off the shelf. Though there is a certain thrill to the chase, it can be quite disappointing if you cannot get what you want and it can mean trudging from one store to the next in search of the similar item. Why go through all this when you can easily resort to online shopping from the comfort of your own home. No long lines, no disappointments and no more getting your toes stamped upon in all that mayhem.

The Internet has revolutionized the way we do everything, including shopping for Christmas gifts. All you need to do is go online and browse to your heart’s content. When you find something you like, you click to order, enter your credit card details and that’s it – you’re done. Somebody somewhere takes care of the rest and will also deliver your gift to your recipient who could be at the other end of the world.

If you are new to the world of online shopping, here are a few tips that will help make the experience easier and safer.

Start Early

You may not be able to see it, but you better believe that there is a cyber-rush for gifts around Christmas time. Getting a head-start on others means you have more to choose from and you can be sure your gift will get to its destination on time.

Bookmark Your Pages

With links and more links, it’s easy to lose that page where you saw the perfect gift for your favorite niece. Bookmarking the page and making a list of items you liked from that site will save you the trouble of having to browse through the catalogue again.

Check Shipping Fees

Always, always check shipping fees and terms. Most online stores charge a flat shipping fee and some even waive the shipping and handling fees if you buy a certain specified amount. Other stores may have discounts on their products but make it up by charging steep fees for shipping and handling. Before you commit to purchasing anything from any one store, do a fair bit of comparison shopping with regards to products as well as shipping.

Shop safe

Because of the obvious difficulty in getting any resolution should anything go wrong, it is better to be safe than sorry. Also, shopping online means you will need to divulge critical financial information. Better to shop from reputed, secured websites. Read through the reviews and see how well the site is rated and also how they resolved any problems they may have had in the past.

Get it delivered

Most online stores will wrap the gift, maybe for a small extra fee and will also deliver it to the recipient on the specified date, saving you that much more time to decorate your Christmas tree, hang the mistletoe, and get those Christmas cookies baked and decorated.

Blogs are revolutionizing the way businesses interact with their customers. To elevate blogs to the next level, you may want to embed video in your business blog. Video is becoming increasingly in demand online. If you heard of YouTube, you know the impact of video online. Why not take advantage of this revolution? You can make your blog more entertaining when you include video. You may provide short clips about using your products, or you could make short presentations about your services.

Don’t confuse video blogs with online commercials, because the two are not at all the same. Video blogs are not supposed to be shameless plugs or infomercials. When you offer video in your blog you are providing valuable information in a different form. Instead of entertainment, think value. That, of course, doesn’t mean that your video should be boring. On the contrary, the more exciting you make it the more buzz it will generate. Webinars are quite common tools that would benefit your blog.

We won’t go into the details of how to get your videos on your blog, but it is easier than you think. Don’t worry if you don’t have video equipment worth millions of dollars. Most digital video recorders are more sophisticated to day than much of the video equipment professionals have used in the past.

One of the most important aspect of video to remember is that it is using much more bandwidth than text. Be sure you check with your hosting company to make sure there is enough bandwidth for you to embed video in your blog. As video is becoming ever more popular, video hosting providers have made it very easy for the end user to add video content to their blogs.

Most popular video sharing sites such as YouTube, Google Video, etc will auto-generate code that you can cut and paste into your blog post. The most widely implemented blog backend providers such as TypePad and WordPress, have both a WYSIWYG and an HTML tab for writing and editing posts. This functionality is very similar to what many people are used to seeing in popular web-page building programs like Adobe’s Dreamweaver. Most blogging software allows you to paste the video embeded code into the HTML tab of your post.

Useful Web Design Tips

There are many aspects to designing an effective web site. Whether you own a company and are looking to advertise, promote, and sell your products and services, or you just simply want to create a web page that will tell others more about you, you want to be sure people will notice it. That is why effective web design is essential to the promotion of yourself, your product, and, of course, your site.

The first thing people are likely to notice when they visit your site is its appearance. It is a good idea to make sure the content is clear and concise so there won’t be any confusion about where to find information. That will save visitors time, and can mean the difference between their continuing to browse your site, or simply finding another like it. The following are some tips that will help you effectively design your site, and can help promote you as well as what you have to offer.

Loading time is probably the most crucial aspect of web design. Just because you have a great looking web site does not mean others will see it if it takes a long time to load. The design you choose should be optimized for the web, and should generally take no more than 10 seconds to load. If the load time is longer than this, people are likely to click on another site instead. While pictures, graphics, and sound can definitely make it appealing, they can take a while to load, so you don’t want to have too many on the front end. The same goes for each individual page on your web site. If a particular page takes too long to load, the person perusing your site may decide to go elsewhere for the information.

Clear navigation is another important aspect of good and effective web design. If your site is easy to get around, users are less likely to become confused. If information is too difficult to locate, they will more than likely go elsewhere to find it. Be sure the links and information are placed so that they make sense to those visiting your site. If there is a logical order, be sure to follow it.

Design your site in terms of percentage, not pixels. This is important because of the many different screen resolutions available for computers today. You want to be sure yours will work for these various resolutions so that more people will be able to access your site and view its contents.

Web browser compatibility is also a very important aspect of good web design. When creating your site, don’t stop when it looks good and works well with one browser. Make sure it works with commonly used browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. This is important because what is compatible with one browser may not be with another. Since the object is to draw as many people as you possibly can to your site, making sure they are able to access it is important.

There are many other features you can add to your site to make it more appealing. Keep in mind that the people who visit your site will come from a wide variety of computer backgrounds, and will own different computer equipment. Be as diverse as you possibly can, and remember that the web is constantly evolving, and in order to keep up, you must evolve with it.
